Writing as practice

Good writing is not built by inspiration alone. It develops through attention, repetition, reflection and honest creative work.
Chartley Writers’ Studio exists to give writers a calm, thoughtful space in which to practise. Our sessions are designed for writers who want more than accountability, but less pressure than a formal academic course. You will be invited to notice more closely, write more bravely, revise more intelligently and take your creative work seriously.
The focus is not on quick fixes or promises of instant publication. It is on becoming a stronger, more attentive and more confident writer over time.

Current programmes

The Writing Room

A relaxed online writing session for writers working on any project.
Bring your notebook, laptop, draft, poem, memoir, novel, essay or blank page. We gather online, settle in, write together in focused silence, and end with a short optional check-in.
Ideal for writers who want regular writing time, gentle accountability and the companionship of writing alongside others.

Who is Chartley Writers’ Studio for?

Chartley Writers’ Studio is for writers at different stages of the creative life.
You may be:
  • a poet looking for fresh creative exercises
  • a memoir writer shaping memory into art
  • a novelist needing structure and momentum
  • a beginner who wants a welcoming place to start
  • a returning writer trying to rebuild confidence
  • an experienced writer looking for community and renewal
You do not need a finished manuscript, publication history or a perfectly formed project. You only need a willingness to practise.

The Writing Room

The Friday Writing Room is a regular online space for protected writing time.
There is no pressure to share work and no requirement to be working on a particular genre. You can use the session for drafting, revising, planning, journalling, editing, researching or simply returning to the page.
A typical session includes:
  • a brief welcome
  • quiet focused writing time
  • a short pause
  • a second writing period
  • optional closing reflection
It is simple, calm and practical: a room where writers write.

Coming soon: The Writer’s Year

The Writer’s Year is the flagship Chartley Writers’ Studio programme: a full year of guided creative practice for writers who want to develop their craft steadily and seriously.
Across 50 sessions, writers move through four creative stages:
  • Seeing: Learning attention, observation, sensory detail and place.
  • Voice: Developing rhythm, tone, language, style and emotional honesty.
  • People: Writing desire, contradiction, dialogue, power, intimacy and moral pressure.
  • Meaning: Building structure, symbolism, tension, revision and thematic coherence.
The programme is designed for mixed groups of poets, memoirists and fiction writers, with exercises that can be adapted across genres.

About Chartley Writers’ Studio

Chartley Writers’ Studio is part of Chartley Books, an independent literary project dedicated to writing, reading, publishing and creative development.
The Studio was created to offer writers a more thoughtful kind of creative space: structured enough to be useful, flexible enough to be welcoming, and serious enough to honour the work.
Our aim is to help writers build not only individual pieces, but a lasting writing practice.
